Burmeister (1807 ? 1892) was a "highly esteemed scientist, held the position of Director of the National Museum in Rio, and later that of the Museum in Buenos Aires" (Borba de Moraes, on his note on Burmeister´s Reise nach Brasilien); he set for Brazil in 1850, partly encouraged by Alexander von Humboldt, where he stayed until 1852, returning to the University of Halle with literally thousands of specimens collected in the duration of his expedition. The lithographed plates are after Burmeister himself, Schenck and other. Two volumes in folio (450 mm x 310 mm). Recent half green calf, spines flat and lettered in gilt.
