Solo exhibition "Fé Feitiço", Simões de Assis Gallery - 2025.
The painting "Pau de Cabinda" (2024) is part of the series "Fé Feitiço", shown at Galeria Simões de Assis, in São Paulo, in January 2025. 2023 and 2024, I sought to investigate Brazilian and Angolan popular beliefs.
The proposal was to delve into the faith transmitted by orality (a faith that inhabits the collective unconscious), without necessarily delving into the religious field. In Brazil, we have what we call "sympathies"; In this series, my interest was to understand the use of herbs, factories and protective gestures that can be intertwined with our culture. After all, Brazil and Angola have stories crossed by the Atlantic and share the roots of the Bantu culture, coming from Africa, especially from Angola.
The painting "Pau de Cabinda" covers the bark of a tree called Cabinda, widely used by men who face erectile dysfunction problems. Although the topic is considered a taboo in Angola (for touching on issues related to masculinity), there are differences around its use: traditional medicine does not recognize it, while ancestral medicine recommends it.
In the painting, we see a man carrying the cabinda tree over his head, while his penis is erect. This image can also be associated with Exu, orixá whose representation, in many contexts, is linked to the phallus and, consequently, to fertility.
The textures that make up the canvas are created with stones, which adorn the painting as a symbolic portal.
