The original edition was published at Paris in 1651, as the "Histoire des derniers troubles du Brésil". The author, Pierre Moreau (died 1660) travelled extensively throughout Europe and in Belgrade was imprisoned and condemned to death on the gallows, but succeeded in obtaining a pardon. He later travelled to Holland where he lived for three years before sailing to Pernambuco in 1646, as secretary to the newly appointed governor of Brazil, Michiel van Goch. He stayed there for two years, taking notes of all he saw, and on returning to France published the "Histoire". The work contains interesting information on the beginning of the Dutch war, giving at the same time an vivid impression of the socio-economic aspect of life in Pernambuco under the Dutch occupation.
