The work "Ouro Benu" was conceived in 2022, during my visit to the Cosme Velho neighborhood, in Rio de Janeiro, where I shared a studio with an artist and dancer friend. It was produced in 2023 for the exhibition "Fires does not ask for permission", presented in the former Asphalt Gallery, located in Gamboa.
The figure of Ana - known as Ouro Benu - inspired me in that period. A black woman, free, with her morning rituals and her feet on the ground dance. From there, I decided to honor not only his presence, but all the racialized people who remain free from the bonds left by racism and slavery.
Exposing this work in Gamboa - a neighborhood known as Pequena Africa, territory of memory and resistance - carries a deep meaning.
The foot on the ground represents strength and rooting.
The red ground floor, house and fight.
The rattles in the anklets, freedom.
